Keeping your engine running smoothly starts with one critical component: the timing belt. At our workshop, we specialise in professional timing belt and wet cambelt replacements on all makes and models, helping you avoid costly engine damage and unexpected breakdowns.

What is a cambelt and how does it work?

The cambelt synchronises the rotation of the crankshaft and camshaft(s). In simple terms, it ensures the engine’s valves open and close at exactly the right time in relation to the pistons moving up and down. The belt has teeth that run over pulleys, keeping everything precisely timed.

Because the cambelt is a wear item made from reinforced rubber, it gradually deteriorates with age, heat cycles, and mileage. Even if a vehicle isn’t driven much, the belt can still age and weaken over time.

What happens if a cambelt breaks?

On many engines, a cambelt failure is classed as an “interference” event — meaning the pistons and valves can collide if timing is lost. If the cambelt snaps (or slips), it can lead to:

Engine cutting out suddenly and not restarting

Bent valves and damaged cylinder head components

Piston damage in severe cases

A repair bill that can be far higher than preventative replacement

That’s why manufacturers set cambelt replacement intervals, and why it’s best not to push beyond them.

When should you replace your cambelt?

Cambelt intervals vary by make, model, and engine type, and they’re usually based on mileage and/or time (for example, every X miles or every X years — whichever comes first). If you’ve bought a used vehicle and you’re unsure when the cambelt was last changed, it’s often safer to treat it as due and get it checked.

If you tow, do lots of short journeys, or drive in heavy stop-start traffic, it can also be sensible to be more proactive with maintenance.

A note on wet belts (belt-in-oil systems)

Some engines — commonly found on certain Ford models — use a wet belt (also known as a belt-in-oil cambelt). These run inside the engine and are lubricated by oil, which means oil specification and service history are especially important. We’ve covered wet belts in more detail on our dedicated page, so if your vehicle uses this system, follow the link for the full guide.
